One of the most unforgettable experiences in Costa Rica is witnessing an arribada at Ostional Wildlife Refuge in Guanacaste.
During an arribada, thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs along the beach at Ostional. I recently had the opportunity to experience an arribada myself, and it was absolutely incredible. Everywhere I looked, turtles were making their way across the sand, digging their nests, laying their eggs, and slowly returning to the ocean.
Even after living in Costa Rica, experiences like this remind me how extraordinary this country really is.
Ostional Wildlife Refuge is a protected nesting area, and during an arribada visitors must enter the protected beach with an accredited guide. This helps protect the turtles and their nesting habitat while allowing visitors to witness this remarkable natural event responsibly.
I toured with the Asociación de Guías Locales de Ostional (AGLO) and had a wonderful experience. The local guides help visitors understand what is happening on the beach while making sure the turtles and nesting areas are respected and protected.
